CAPE working to promote diversity and inclusion for City employees

Dallas has the largest gay population of any city in Texas and the sixth largest Lesbian Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning (LGBTQ) population in the United States. Acknowledging that the City’s workforce is a reflection of its residents, the Dallas City Council approved a statement of support for LGBTQ employees in 2014: the City Association for Promoting Equality (CAPE).

“CAPE is a way for LGBTQ employees to celebrate equality and plan service activities and partnerships within the community,” said CAPE Vice President Brian J. Price. “As the City maintains an ethical, diverse and capable staff, employee groups like CAPE provide assurance that the citizens of Dallas are receiving world class services.”

On May 15, CAPE was formed to raise awareness of equality issues in the workplace and foster an organizational culture that is inclusive and supportive of all City employees by promoting professional and personal development and breaking negative stereotypes through education. CAPE was created to give City employees a resource for sharing information, life experiences and building support that extends beyond City Hall.

CAPE recently participated in the Alan Ross Texas Freedom Parade on Sunday, September 20.

Membership in CAPE is open to active employees of the City of Dallas (full-time, part-time, seasonal, temporary), or employees of a staffing service agency on assignment with the City of Dallas. Associate membership is open to elected officials and retired City employees.

The next CAPE event will be held October 15. For more information visit: www.dallascape.org or on Facebook at http://on.fb.me/1gK3yCE.
