Students invited to enter Dallas Public Library’s Youth Poetry competition

Students in grades 2-12 who live in the City of Dallas or attend school in Dallas are invited to enter the Dallas Public Library’s 20th annual Express Yourself! Youth Poetry competition. Entries will be accepted through January 31, 2016.

To mark the competition’s 20th anniversary, the library is planning special events throughout the year, including visits from professional poets, open mic poetry slams, and more. Schools may request workshops, led by local poets, to help inspire students to write a poem or create cover art to submit to the competition.

IMG_1783“We are thrilled that the poetry competition continues to inspire the young people of Dallas to be creative year after year,” said Dallas Public Library Director Jo Giudice. “It is a fitting tribute to Joe M. Dealey Sr. who was passionate about language and self-expression.”

Finalists will be honored at a ceremony at the J. Erik Jonsson Central Library.

on Saturday April 23 and their poems will be published in the 20th edition of the Express Yourself! Poetry Competition Anthology.

Students whose artistic talents lean toward the visual also have the opportunity to express themselves by entering library’s cover art contest. Artists are invited to draw or paint a cover for the anthology that reflects the title of the poetry competition. The winner’s artwork will be on the front cover and four finalists’ artwork will be featured on the back cover.
