Charter Review Commission calls for suggested amendments to the Dallas City Charter

Dallas – The City of Dallas is currently undergoing a review of the Dallas City Charter. Chapter II, Section 3, of the Charter states “At intervals of not more than 10 years…the Charter shall be reviewed by a commission appointed by the council.”  

The Commission is responsible for reviewing the Charter and submitting a report to the City Council no later than May 21, 2024.  

After receiving the Commission’s report, the City Council may adopt, modify, or disregard the Commission’s recommended amendments and/or propose its own. Any City Council-approved amendments will be listed as propositions on the November 5, 2024 ballot for Dallas voters.

In the coming months, the Charter Review Commission will be reviewing policy, operational and technical provisions of the Charter. 

The public is invited to submit suggested amendments for consideration by the Charter Review Commission. Suggested amendments and comments may be submitted in the following ways:  

Suggested amendments must be submitted by Friday, December 15, 2023. All amendments will be reviewed by appropriate city departments and added to a running list for the Charter Review Commission to consider. Commissioners will also have the opportunity to present their own amendments to the body at the Chair’s discretion.    

As dictated by the Texas Election Code, the City Council must vote no later than August 19, 2024, on which Charter amendments, if any, to place on the November 5, 2024 ballot for Dallas voters’ consideration.
