January 2024 City of Dallas Winter Weather Response

Updates as of 4 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 17

The following locations will close at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17 due to lack of heat:

  • Park Forest Branch
  • Grauwyler Park Branch
  • Vickery Park Branch
  • Paul Laurence Dunbar Lancaster-Kiest Branch

All will reopen as scheduled tomorrow morning.

Garbage and recycle collections were suspended Monday and Tuesday due to the unsafe winter weather conditions.

Garbage collections in Monday and Tuesday areas will be collected on Wednesday and Thursday.

Recycle crews are assisting with garbage collections; therefore recycle collections for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday areas will resume next week. The close-the-lid policy for recycle carts will be suspended next week in Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday areas. Bundle overflow materials and place on top or next to your recycle cart.

Wednesday through Friday garbage and recycle collections are delayed one to two days.

Grauwyler Park and Park Forest Branch libraries will close at 2:30 p.m. due to lack of heat. All other libraries will close at 5 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 16.

Park and Recreation centers are open during regular business hours to provide residents warming relief. Golf courses are closed Tuesday, Jan. 16. 

Locate your private cut-off valve on the property before an emergency situation arises. For emergency assistance in turning your water off at the meter, you can reach Dallas Water Utilities 24 hours a day by calling 3-1-1.

Dallas Water Utilities repair crews arrived at 2200 N Pearl St. and Woodall Rodgers Freeway at 4:45 a.m. Crews isolated the water main break at 6:20 a.m. to an 8” pipeline. All west bound lanes on the Woodall Rodgers Freeway service road are closed by Dallas Police, due to heavy water in the area between Pearl and Fairmount streets. The right and center lanes will be closed. Repairs will begin when the water drains down. No business or residential customers have been impacted.

All recreation centers will have a noon delayed opening on Tuesday, Jan. 16

Due to inclement weather, all trials scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 16 will be rescheduled. Defendants will be notified of the new court date via mail. The Municipal Court customer service windows will be open Tuesday, Jan. 16 from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The City of Dallas is continuing to monitor the severity of the winter storm. Due to the prioritization of the safety of our residents and employees, the following departments have altered their operating hours. Check back frequently for updates.  

Sanitation- Due to hazardous weather and dangerous street conditions, collection operations are suspended Monday, Jan. 15. Garbage, recycle, and brush and bulky item collections are suspended Monday due to the unsafe winter weather conditions.  Customers should leave rollcarts at their usual collection point.  Crews will provide service as soon as they are safely able to begin work this week.  Please monitor Dallas.gov/Sanitation for further updates. 

Sanitation customers are also encouraged to sign-up for service advisories delivered by email, text, push notification, or automated phone call. Visit Dallas.gov/Sanitation and click “get a reminder” in the calendar widget, or download the Dallas Sanitation app in the App Store or Google Play.  

City of Dallas road crews will be spreading sand across bridges and overpasses to keep them clear and passable. The Texas Department of Transportation is responsible for the highways, and the North Texas Tollway Authority is responsible for the toll roads. 

The Temporary Inclement Weather Shelter at Fair Park is nearing capacity. The City of Dallas is working with partners to open TIWS locations at Oak Lawn Methodist Church at 3014 Oak Lawn Ave., Dallas TX 75219 and Austin Street Center at 2929 Hickory St., Dallas, TX 75226. Code Compliance Services is receiving an increased number of code service calls. An apartment complex in District 13 is being investigated after management turn off water to prevent pipes from bursting. Information about minimum property standards may be found at DallasCityNews.net

Dallas Fire Rescue and Dallas Police Department continue to maintain emergency response capabilities and supporting TIWS operations.  

DART Operations teams are in place across the region to ensure regular service is not impacted by the expected weather. To ensure DART riders stay warm while transferring, and to aid with travel planning, the following DART transit centers will be available from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. 

  • J.B. Jackson Jr. Transit Center/MLK Jr. Station,1412 S. Trunk Ave., Dallas 75210  
  • CBD West Transfer Center, 920 San Jacinto Street, Dallas 75202  
  • Downtown Irving/Heritage Crossing Station, 201 Rock Island Rd., Irving 75060
  •  South Garland Transit Center, 4051 Leon Road, Garland 75041  

All other DART transit centers and stations will be available from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. 

Power outages may be reported to Oncor by texting the word OUT to the number 66367. If you see downed power lines stay away from them and any debris they may energize on contact and report it to 911. For more information visit stormcenter.oncor.com
