Sanando Familias is a domestic violence awareness event that is coupled with an amazing haunted house, costume contest, and fall carnival. There is also fun and food for the adults.

“We believe that education is key to overcoming domestic violence,” Assistant City Attorney Michelle Buendia said. “We also believe that starting with our youth is instrumental. When we teach adults that nobody has the right to abuse them and that there are resources available to help them get out of domestic violence situations, that’s powerful.”

In most Latin American countries, domestic violence is legal, and immigrants wrongfully believe that it is legal in the US too. Domestic violence becomes a normal behavior and is passed down generation to generation. As a community, we need to find creative ways to reach out to families regarding what is domestic violence, its effects, and how to get out of a potentially life threatening situation.

“Sanando Familias is creating an environment where domestic violence is not a taboo subject and where we can attract all families, even those where domestic violence is happening, to become educated,” Buendia added.
