Dogs seized in DAS animal cruelty case now available for adoption

Dallas Animal Services (DAS) announced today that more than 20 dogs rescued during a Jan. 13 animal cruelty raid are ready to be adopted and more than 80 other animals are ready for new homes through the City’s transfer partners.

“Today is the first day of a new life for more than 100 animals,” said DAS Manager Jody Jones. “We can now begin the journey of finding them a new home with loving families in our community.”

Melinda Vinzant has been charged with numerous counts of cruelty to animals after a joint City of Dallas raid on her southeast Dallas property last month. Officers rescued 58 dogs and eight horses which officially became the property of DAS on Jan. 22.

Many of the dogs seized during the raid were pregnant and have since had puppies, bringing the total number of dogs to 101. The eight horses are in good health and are now living at the Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch animal sanctuary in Murchison, TX.

“These animals are all vaccinated, neutered and ready to go to their new homes,” Jones said, adding that some of the animals were not quite ready for adoption. “These animals have been placed with our transfer partners who will care for them until they’re ready.”

DAS staff stressed the importance of spaying and neutering pets, noting that all the animals seized in the raid were unsterilized. Mrs. Vinzant admitted that she initially had only two dogs, which because they were unsterilized, ultimately yielded the additional 58 dogs.

These kinds of targeted initiatives are part of DallasPETS, a city-wide campaign launched in November to address and foster community solutions for illegal dumping, loose animals, abuse and adoptions. For more information visit DallasPETS.org.
