City teams up with DISD to reduce waste by recycling cartons at home and at school

Students can now recycle at home and at school, courtesy of the Carton Commitment program, a partnership between Sanitation Services and the Dallas Independent School District (DISD).

The Carton Council Is working with the City to increase carton recycling in the U.S. Recycling technology and local collection programs are promoted with a goal of limiting the number of cartons that become waste. The Council says that the demand for recycled paper from cartons decreases the strain on natural resources and provides a market for recycled goods.

IMG_7208Schools participating in the Carton Commitment program are: John B. Hood Middle School, William Hawley Atwell Law Academy, Stonewall Jackson, Charles Rice Learning Center and Lorenzo De Zavala. Lorenzo De Zavala received the first place Green Shield Award for having the most students sign the Carton Commitment pledge.

Cartons must be separated from other materials at the recycling facility in order to be recycled and are then shipped to a paper mill. A pulp is created from the fiber in the carton material which is made into other products such as paper products and building materials.
