Mayor’s GrowSouth VISTA program now recruiting candidates

Mayor Mike Rawlings is recruiting candidates to join the GrowSouth Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA) program. The project will hire seven VISTA members who will provide support in Southern Dallas through various community initiatives and events. Each VISTA member will receive $983 per month plus an additional $5,500 educational award, options for health benefits, child care benefits and paid sick leave/vacation.
Deadline for applications is May 20. The program begins July 18, 2016 and ends July 21, 2017.

“We all have a stake in our city’s future,” Rawlings said. “Becoming a VISTA member is a chance for people to be a part of building a more caring and engaging community. It is an opportunity to build relationships and make a real difference.”

VISTA members are charged with reinvigorating and inspiring underserved Southern Dallas neighborhoods; strengthening neighborhood associations and helping to develop programs that bring people out of poverty. In addition to assisting neighborhood associations with establishing community development visions and plans, members will interact with the Mayor and City Councilmembers.

The mission of the Dallas Mayor’s VISTA program is to reinvigorate and inspire the neighborhoods of traditionally underserved regions of the city to build the capacity of both formal and informal neighborhood associations, by providing resources and networks to accomplish neighborhood driven strategies.

The Mayor’s GrowSouth initiative recognizes Dallas as a city of neighborhoods and embraces the unique identity and strength of each. It is a plan that strives to enhance collective impact through collaboration and partnerships to leverage our resources and produce effective results. The GrowSouth VISTA team will address the causes of poverty by helping neighborhoods recognize and tackle challenges and put plans into action for the prosperity of southern Dallas neighborhoods.
