Love Field prepares for potential winter weather

The weather can change pretty quickly in north Texas, which is why crews at Love Field airport are making preparations now, well ahead of potential snow and ice storms.

“Our mission is to maintain airport operations to airline minimum standards,” said Operation Manager Cliff York. Love Field operations staff, airlines, tenants, and FAA tower representatives are active participants in providing standards for a safe airport operation during extreme weather.

Love Field will have three areas for deicing commercial aircraft; general aviation aircraft will be deiced in the Fixed Base Operator’s ramps. The airport also has four snow plows, four brooms and two liquid deicing applicators along with tractors and Bobcats with spreader capabilities. Seven 4,500 gallon tanks are in place with FAA approved deicing materials.

In accordance with environmental regulations, a system of valves allow crews to close storm drains during deicing operations to prevent chemicals from entering the drainage system. Love Field also has a plan to keep the roads, parking lots and approaches to the airport clear of snow and ice.
