To meet federal Lead and Copper Rule requirements and continuing improving our service line inventory, Dallas Water Utilities (DWU) will begin mailing notifications in early October to more than 200,000 customers whose service line materials are currently listed as “unknown”.
A service line is the pipe that carries water from the water main to a home or building. Service lines can be made up of many different materials. An “unknown” classification does not mean lead has been found in a customer’s service line or detected in drinking water. It simply means DWU does not yet have enough information to confirm the service line material.
Customers who receive a notification are encouraged to complete DWU’s Customer Service Line Survey at bit.ly/DWULeadInfo. The survey provides guidance on how to locate and identify the service line entering a home or building and allows customers to upload photos to help DWU verify the material. Even if customers are unsure of the material, the information they provide can help DWU determine whether additional verification is needed.
The notifications support DWU’s ongoing efforts to identify service line materials throughout Dallas and maintain an accurate service line inventory. Federal requirements call for public water systems to maintain service line inventories and notify customers whose service lines are classified as lead, galvanized requiring replacement or unknown.
DWU completed its initial service line inventory in 2024 and continues working to verify and refine service line information. The utility is also preparing an expanded baseline inventory required by Nov. 1, 2027. The updated inventory will include additional information to support service line identification, future sampling, replacement planning and other lead and copper programs.
To date, DWU has not identified any lead service lines through its service line inventory efforts. DWU has worked for decades to reduce potential sources of lead in drinking water infrastructure. Dallas also uses corrosion-control treatment designed to reduce the potential for lead and other metals to leach from plumbing materials into drinking water.
Dallas Water Utilities is designated a “Superior” Public Water System by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. DWU continues to monitor drinking water and comply with state and federal drinking water requirements.
