Dallas Public Library makes prom dreams reality with free formal wear

Dallas Public Library’s annual prom wear giveaway opens March 9, and this year high school students have four opportunities to find the perfect gown or formal wear.

Thousands of gowns in various sizes and styles will be available from the library’s Fairy Tale Closet, as well as shoes, accessories and a few suits and jackets for the guys or for those who eschew the traditional gown.

The Fairy Tale Closet is open at the J. Erik Jonsson Central Library on the following days:

Saturday, March 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. (appointments full)
Wednesday, March 13 from 1 to 4 p.m.
Thursday, March 14 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Saturday, March 16 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Reservations are recommended and can be made at http://dallaslibrary2.org/teen/fairytalecloset.php. Walk-ins are welcome first come, first served. For more information, call 214-670-7943 or email [email protected].

The Fairy Tale Closet is open to girls, guys and non-binary students. Dozens of volunteers serve as Fairy Godparents to assist in the clothing selection. Service organization Project Beauty partnered with Dallas Public Library this year to collect hundreds of dresses and provide hair and makeup advice during the Saturday events.

The Fairy Tale Closet began in 2014 and is restocked each year with donations from hundreds of individuals and organizations. The Friends of the Dallas Public Library provide other supplies to make the event a success.
