Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center Dallas Master Plan Update Highlights Infrastructure and Amenities Connecting Communities, Attracting Tourists, and Driving Growth
Following Wednesday’s detailed briefing to Dallas City Council on the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center Dallas (KBHCCD) Master Plan expansion, key details have emerged that underscore the project’s vital role in the future of Dallas.
This expansive initiative is set to significantly elevate the city’s infrastructure, bolster the economic landscape, and create a more cohesive connection with The Cedars, South Dallas, and Southern Dallas through innovative urban development and targeted community initiatives.
“Our strategic planning and community engagement efforts extend beyond expanding the KBHCCD; they are about weaving a richer tapestry for our city,” said Dallas City Manager T.C. Broadnax. “This project is a testament to our dedication to fostering economic growth, cultural enrichment, and inclusivity across Dallas.”
A pivotal aspect of the briefing focused on the transformative approach to integrating Dallas communities south of downtown. Collaborative discussions with the City of Dallas, Inspire Dallas, Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR), and High-Speed Rail (HSR) have steered the project from its original deck park concept to an expanded urban open space. This reimagined approach aims to seamlessly connect Downtown Dallas with The Cedars and South Dallas.
“The introduction of these urban open spaces is pivotal for providing accessible outdoor areas and pedestrian pathways,” said Rosa Fleming, Director of Convention and Event Services. “These enhancements deepen the connection between the Convention Center and its neighboring communities.”
The expansion project places a premium on strengthening both physical and digital connectivity within the city — notably, the introduction of a new Rail District and trolley route, parallel to existing DART light rail. Moreover, the project includes a Wi-Fi rollout across the Convention Center and its adjacent public open spaces, bridging the digital divide and increasing digital access for all visitors and residents.
“This expansion is a monumental step towards fostering a sustainable and inclusive future for Dallas,” said Craig Davis, CEO of Visit Dallas. “By focusing on connectivity, workforce development, and tourism, we are laying the groundwork for a flourishing, vibrant Dallas.”
The expansion focuses on strategic efforts to amplify tourism in The Cedars, South Dallas, and Southern Dallas. Plans include integrating local landmarks into the Convention Center design RFQ and forming a South Dallas Task Force dedicated to increasing the visibility of these landmarks and driving tourism South. Furthermore, a dedicated section on the Convention Center master plan website for exploring nearby attractions, coupled with the Rail District corridor’s potential to attract new businesses, underscores the commitment to revitalizing areas south of Downtown.
