Dallas Public Library bids farewell to BookEnds

BookEnds, the Dallas Public Library’s used book store, will close its doors at the end of July. The City’s Office of Vital Statistics, currently housed on the first floor of City Hall, will begin occupying the space in August.

A fixture at the Central Library since 1985, BookEnds has sold vinyl records, paper and hardback books, audiobooks and DVDs. Everything in the store is now priced at 50 cents or less, and customers can fill a box with anything in the store for just three bucks.

 “We are adding items to the sale from our storage, so each day could reveal a new find,” said Library Director Jo Giudice. “There are treasures to be found, as everyone’s definition of ‘treasure’ is unique.”

Giudice says “the opportunity to bring Vital Statistics to the Library is in perfect alignment with our mission to serve the public and give them easy access to information.”

Citizens using services at Vital Statistics will be encouraged to get a free library card and register to vote while they’re waiting. Customers can also read books and learn about summer programs for kids, online high school and GED/ESL classes, and other library features.

Friends of the Dallas Public Library will host book sales twice a year, and there are plans to host pop-up sales at the Central Library – popular at other library locations.
