Dallas area Superintendents meet with Senator Cornyn to discuss education reform

Dallas, Fort Worth, Arlington, and Irving ISD superintendents met with U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) at the Latino Cultural Center to discuss the Every Student Succeeds Act, an initiative that ends the Common Core mandate and restores decision-making power to parents and teachers.

“We don’t want to stifle student creativity,” Cornyn said at the meeting, held at the Latino Cultural Center. The Act reduces federal regulation, encourages career and technology education and gives students hands-on experience to help them find their career path.

Cornyn2“I think Texas has a competitive advantage because of our history with accountability and the players we have involved at this time,” said Dallas ISD Superintendent Michael Hinojosa. “We have some new tests that are going to be considered in the future and there will be some good opportunities to make this work,” he said.

Every Student Succeeds allows states to decide what academic standards they will adopt, without interference from Washington. The federal government may not mandate or incentivize states to adopt or maintain any particular set of standards, including Common Core. States will be free to decide what academic standards they will maintain in their states.
