Council briefed on City’s award-winning Public Art Program

The Arts, Culture and Libraries Committee recently provided the City Council with an overview of the City’s Public Art Program and the status of Public Art Maintenance and Conservation.

Maintenance and conservation costs since 2006 show that in 2015-2016, $160,000 was spent, in 2014-2015, $133, 268 was spent, in 2009-2015, $82,233 was spent and that 90 percent of expenditures were for urgent maintenance of the Pegasus at the Magnolia Hotel. In 2008-2009, $126,806 was spent, in 2007-2008, $142,436 was spent and in 2006-2007, $134,408 was spent.

CaptureProjects underway in fiscal year 2015, in progress for fiscal year 2016 and planned for fiscal year 2017 focus on conservation of high profile works, restoration of damaged or vandalized works, conservation assessment for repair or restoration and metal and bronze conservation treatments.

New approaches to Public Art maintenance and conservation in the works now include looking for new revenue streams such as licensing agreements with artists for the production and sale of objects at Love Field with public art imagery, planned implementation of public art merchandise to go on sale in November, donations to the Public Art Maintenance Fund and tours showcasing public art.

The City’s Public Art program has received the Americans for the Arts Public Art in Review Award; the AIA Dallas Honor Award for Outstanding Achievement; and the Texas Association for Landscape Design Award.
