City of Dallas urges electricity conservation and emergency preparedness
With extreme temperatures forecast across North Texas, the City of Dallas is encouraging residents to conserve and prepare.
Public facilities including recreation centers and libraries are open during normal business hours for relief from the heat. Residents are encouraged to call ahead in order to verify their operating hours.

Residents should follow the tips below to prepare in the event of power loss:
- Take an inventory now of the items you need that rely on electricity.
- Charge devices and plan to use batteries to meet your needs if the power goes out.

- Locate and test emergency supplies available in case of no power. Have enough nonperishable food and water and flashlights with extra batteries for every household member.
- Use a surge protector for appliances or unplug unused electronics to avoid damage from electrical surges and conserve power.
- Make plans to refrigerate medicines or power medical devices.
- If safe, go to an alternate location for cooling relief.
- Keep freezers and refrigerators closed. A closed refrigerator will keep food cold for about four hours. A full freezer will keep the temperature for about 48 hours. Use coolers with ice if necessary.
- Only use generators outdoors and away from windows.
- Check on your neighbors. Older adults and young children are especially vulnerable to extreme temperatures
