City of Dallas to host Emergency Preparedness Extravaganza Sept. 12 at Klyde Warren Park

The Office of Emergency Management (OEM) is recognizing National Preparedness Month in September with the 2015 Dallas Emergency Preparedness Extravaganza. OEM and public safety partners will educate citizens to “KnoWhat2Do” if emergency and disaster events occur. The Fair will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday Sept. 12 at Klyde Warren Park.

The goal of National Preparedness Month is to increase awareness and encourage everyone to prepare for emergencies at home, and in schools, organizations, businesses and places of worship. OEM staff encourage all citizens to become preparedness leaders and share what they learn with family, friends and neighbors.

“Not many people worry about disasters in their day-to-day life,” said OEM Emergency Management Coordinator Adam Traylor. “But the truth is that we are all vulnerable to becoming victims of some type of emergency situation.”

Preparing for an emergency starts with these steps:

•Educate yourself about possible emergencies and identify sources of information in your community that will be helpful before, during and after an event.
• Have a plan that includes your community, family, and pets.
• Collect items to build an emergency supply kit.
• Get involved in programs and organizations that provide disaster relief in your area.

Attendees will have the opportunity to build their own preparedness kit, get a firsthand look at the City’s Police and Fire response vehicles, view live demonstrations and explore information and resources from more than 25 booths and community partners including FEMA, OSHA and the American Red Cross.

“Preparedness is a shared responsibility and it takes the entire community to be ready for any disaster that might occur,” Traylor said.
