The Dallas Commission on Homelessness briefed the City’s Housing Committee on establishment of an ongoing Homeless Commission. The Commission would advise the Council on homeless issues, provide a forum for voicing homeless concerns and identify needed community programs and services.
The Commission’s recommendations include:
- Increase targeted street outreach, housing placement, and supportive services
- Convert to community-wide coordinated entry and single system
- Increase facility development and shelter capacity
- Increase permanent supportive housing
- Work to prevent homelessness within criminal justice and treatment facilities
- Ongoing and formal organizational structure
Structure of the ongoing commission would consist of 15 members, each serving two-year terms and representing the Mayor and each Council District. The City’s Housing/Community Services Department would also provide assistance, along with external partners.
Next steps will include a Council briefing, consideration of an ordinance drafted by the City Attorney’s Office, member nominations accepted by the City Secretary and Council consideration of nominees.
