New Source of Income Protections approved by Dallas City Council

The City of Dallas City Council passed new Source of Income protections on Oct. 26, 2016. The Protections prohibit discrimination based on Source of Income in the sale, advertising or rental of housing as allowed by State Law.

Under Current State law, Protected Sources of Income include governmental payments such as Social Security or Disability and also include Spousal and Child Support. For Veterans, Protected Sources of Income includes any lawful source, including funding from a federal housing assistance program.

The new Protections went into effect on Oct. 31, 2016 and also require housing providers who receive city funding on or after that date to accept Housing Choice Vouchers and set aside 10 percent of units for Housing Choice Voucher holders.
