Economic Development Committee briefed on challenges of shared prosperity

The Dallas City Council’s Economic Development Committee was briefed on progress made and challenges faced on the issue of shared prosperity in the City of Dallas.

Economic Development staff members are continuing efforts to attract new businesses and promote business expansions and proactively focus on anti-poverty initiatives related to workforce readiness and small business development.

Other efforts include pursuing grocery store opportunities in Southern Dallas; creating non-conventional healthy food solutions; partnering with non-profits and faith-based organizations to form a Dallas Food Policy Council; and establishing a baseline report related to food access, affordability and education.

Staff noted that among the lessons learned are that city policies and actions can affect the market, that strong partnerships and infrastructure investment are critical and that economic development is linked to quality of life.
