FY 2016-17 Proposed City Budget

FY 2016-17 Proposed City Budget

Each year, the city manager presents the City of Dallas budget and citizens can weigh in on how their tax dollars are spent. For 2017, the City is focused on strengthening the city, maintaining infrastructure and preparing for the future.

Every two years, the City surveys residents to learn how they feel about our services. The 2016 survey shows that overall satisfaction with city services is 17 percent higher than the national average. This budget was developed based on survey results and feedback from Dallas city council members.

This coming year, the City will be receiving $60 million in new general fund tax revenue. $44 million of that will be dedicated to public safety. Over the next year, 200 additional police officers and 50 public safety officers will join the department. Eligible DPD and Dallas Fire-Rescue staff will also receive a two-step raise up to 10 percent.

Residents made it clear that they want resources dedicated to addressing loose dogs. In response, the City will invest $1.5 million dollars for overnight staff at Dallas Animal Services and for spay/neuter services and microchipping.

Streets and alleys are a high priority. Maintaining the current condition of our streets will require approval of the proposed budget and the 2017 bond program, which will provide funding to maintain our streets.

Dallas cannot plan for the future without acknowledging the loss we endured on July 7, 2016. Our City was forever changed with the loss of five officers and many more who were injured. The outpouring of support from around the world has helped our City move forward. The Dallas community reminded us that we are “Dallas strong.”

The upcoming year’s budget will help us continue to strengthen our city. Citizens of Dallas have multiple options to provide feedback on the City of Dallas FY 2016-17 budget as recommended by the City Manager.

Options to submit feedback:

  1. Attend any Budget Town Hall Meetings in your City Council District
  2. Participate in a Virtual Budget Town Hall Meeting via your home computer, mobile device, or telephone. (Flash player required)
