Spring is on the way: time to prepare for severe weather

Spring is almost here and with it comes an increased chance of severe weather in North Texas.

Make sure you’re ready by building or restocking your family emergency kit. Replace anything you used during the winter and check expiration dates on food, water, batteries and medications. These items should be rotated or replaced regularly to keep your emergency kit in the best condition when you need it most.

With your kit up to date, create a plan to keep your family safe during severe weather. Update contact lists to make sure you can communicate easily in an emergency. If you hear the Outdoor Warning System or get an Emergency Alert on your mobile device or radio, take shelter in the nearest building or sturdy structure.

Safe areas include:

  • Basements or storm shelters
  • Lowest levels of a building without windows
  • Bathrooms, stairwells, or closets; stay away from water heaters or windows
  • Hallways

Once you’ve identified your safe area, make sure you have:

  • Emergency kit
  • NOAA weather radio and batteries
  • Cell phones (with chargers – regular and battery powered)
  • Flashlights
  • Pillows or mattresses to protect from flying debris
  • Important personal documents and cash
  • Pets. Microchip your pets and keep them with you during severe weather.
