Got a leaky faucet? Fix it to save water and money

More than a trillion gallons of water is wasted every year in American homes due to minor leaks. The Environmental Protection Agency promotes Fix a Leak Week, March 14-20 to heighten public awareness about the need to repair those pesky drips.

A free do-it-yourself plumbing repairs workshop will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday March 15 at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Recreation Center, 2922 Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. Instructor will be DWU’s Joshua Knickerbocker, a licensed plumber. Topics covered at the workshop include:

  • Replacing toilet flapper valves
  • Fixing leaky faucets
  • Installing faucet aerators and low-flow showerheads
  • Water conservation tips

DWU, Texas Home Depot stores and the Tarrant Regional Water District are also sponsoring free Fix a Leak Workshops at all Home Depot’s at the following times on Saturday March 19:

  • 10 to 10:40 a.m.         (Repair/Replace Leaking Faucets)
  • 10:40 to 11:20 a.m.         (Repair/Replace Leaking Toilets)
  • 11:20 a.m. to noon        (Repair/Replace Sprinkler Heads)

Space is limited, so please register online.

“We’re hoping this program will heighten public awareness about the importance of checking household fixtures and sprinkler systems for leaks,” said DWU Division Manager Carole R. Davis. “Doing so not only saves money, it also saves our precious water resources.” Click here for DWU educational and instructional videos.
