Find your dream prom dress with Dallas Public Library

Registration is now open!

Prom season can be an expensive time for families, but the Dallas Public Library (DPL) is here to help alleviate some of that financial stress. DPL’s program, Fairy Tale Closet, helps cut the cost by offering free, new and gently-used formal wear to high school girls.

Women from throughout Dallas have raided their closets and donated hundreds of dresses to the library for the cause. Retail stores like Neiman Marcus, Bella Bridesmaids and Sam Moon have also donated.

“This is the sixth year that we’ve opened the Fairy Tale Closet, and it continues to grow every year with more donations and more girls looking for dresses,” said Melissa Dease, Communications & Youth Services Administrator.

Inclusion is important to DPL and they are now serving the LGBTQ+ community as well.

“This year we’ve added a few jackets and suits for those who eschew ball gowns and a second event for any LGBTQ+ teens who may not be comfortable with the initial giveaway,” said Dease. “The Fairy Tale Closet is a way for the library to engage with teenagers and build a relationship among high school students. This encourages teens to take advantage of the library’s resources and to see the library as a welcoming, safe space in their community.”

Teens should make a reservation to ensure a chance to enter the closet by calling 214-670-7943, emailing [email protected] or online at http://dallaslibrary.librarymarket.com/fairy-tale-closet-prom-dress-giveaway-0.

The giveaway events are at Dallas Central Library:
1515 Young Street – 7th Floor
March 9, 2019, 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 pm
March 10, 2019, 1:00 to 4:30 p.m. (LGBTO+ centric event)

If you’re looking to help, donations of formal wear, including dresses and accessories, will be accepted at any Dallas Public Library location through March 1.
