Economic Development Committee approves workforce placement and retention program
The City Council’s Economic Development Committee has endorsed a workforce placement and retention program to serve impoverished and disconnected communities in Dallas. The pilot program would be funded with a $1.5 million allocation from the City’s Public Private Partnership Fund and will be considered by the full Council in August.
In May, the Office of Economic Development highlighted a need to reach out to low-income/low-skilled residents in high poverty/unemployment areas to increase awareness of existing resources. The pilot program would focus on community outreach, case management, career/basic skills, industry-based training, integrated adult literacy and job placement.
The community outreach would put special emphasis on formerly incarcerated, out-of-school young adults, single parents and high poverty individuals. Economic Development Director Karl Zavitkovsky said the goal is to have 75 percent of participants employed and making a living wage at the end of the program’s performance period.
