Christmas Tree Recycling in Dallas: What You Need to Know
The holidays bring joy, celebrations… and a few extra questions about what goes where when it’s time to clean up. Items like ornaments, wrapping paper, tinsel, old toys, and worn clothing should go in your garbage roll cart if they can’t be reused or donated.
One holiday item that often gets overlooked is the Christmas tree. While natural trees do not belong in your blue recycling cart, they can still be recycled through the City of Dallas. After the holidays, residents can recycle live, natural Christmas trees by dropping them off at the City landfill or one of the transfer stations, helping reduce waste and keep organic material out of the landfill.
From December 26, 2025, through January 24, 2026, Dallas residents may drop off natural Christmas trees, with all decorations removed, at McCommas Bluff Landfill or at one of Dallas’ transfer stations. Trees dropped off for recycling will be mulched and beneficially reused at McCommas Bluff for on-site road and drainage projects.
Trees may also be placed out during scheduled brush and bulky item collection; however, trees collected through this service generally cannot be separated from other materials for recycling.
Before dropping off your tree, please remove all decorations, tinsel, and lights. Do not bag or wrap the tree.
Artificial trees, on the other hand, are not recyclable due to the mixed materials used in their construction. These trees may be taken to a landfill or transfer station, or placed out with brush and bulky items for collection.
By recycling your natural Christmas tree and properly disposing of holiday items, you’re helping keep Dallas clean, green, and sustainable—during the holidays and beyond. For more details, including drop-off locations and hours, visit Dallas.gov/Sanitation.
