Dallas Park and Recreation Department has teamed with American Society of Safety Engineers Southwest Chapter to host a family-friendly bike fair from 9 a.m. to1 p.m. Saturday May 14 at Cotton Bowl Plaza at Fair Park.
An on-site obstacle course for cyclists ages five to 14 will recreate real-life cycling situations. Attendees can practice scanning for automobiles, develop correct riding postures, learn intersection safety tips, and detect and avoid road hazards such as tree limbs, potholes and rocks.
“Everyone will learn the ABC’s of bicycling, from preparing their bike to be road ready to commuting with bike,” said Stephanie Johnson of the American Society of Safety Engineers. “Traveling on two wheels is healthy for cyclists and for the environment and we want everyone to be properly trained for safety’s sake,” said Johnson.
South Dallas/Fair Park active will lead a seven-mile bicycle tour of South Dallas historic and community landmarks during the event. The tours will give residents and others a chance to get to know the area as a place to live, work, grow and play.
Other activities include demonstrations, fitness and nutrition advice, health screenings and bike and clothing displays will be available. Vendors will provide free giveaways and prizes and information including materials from state and local agencies on safe biking. City of Dallas staff will provide updated information about Dallas’ plans for new bike trails and give tips for or sharing the road with other vehicles.
