City proposes construction of new recycling facility at McCommas Bluff Landfill

The Department of Sanitation will ask the City Council to approve construction of a new 120,000 ton-per-year material recycling facility at the McCommas Bluff Landfill. City staff has recommended awarding a 15-year contract to Fomento de Construcciones y Contratas (FCC) to provide single stream recyclable processing services at the landfill.

FCC is a European-based company that provides waste and recycling services to more than 5,000 municipalities worldwide. The company would hire local employees, with preference to southeast Oak Cliff residents. They will also partner with the City on local school recycling and waste diversion education programs and reach out to southeast Oak Cliff area elementary schools and the commercial sector.

“Additionally, we think the new facility will attract local green industries, because of the opportunity to use and reprocess the recovered materials, promoting growth and potential jobs,” said Sanitation Director Kelly High. The new facility will also recycle more materials that can’t currently be recycled.
