On Tuesday, July 21, the City of Dallas Planning & Development will host a Zoning 101 conversation at Dallas City Hall. Entitled “ How Dallas Takes Shape” is the launch of the Zoning 101 Tour. It is an interactive public event that will offer residents a hands-on introduction to zoning, growth, and the rules shaping where people live, work, move, gather, and grow.
And here’s the kicker, you don’t have to be a zoning expert to be part of the conversation. This event is geared toward everyone, whether this will be your first time learning about zoning and how it impacts you or if you’ve been attending zoning meetings for years.
Unlike a traditional presentation or public meeting, the July 21 event will invite attendees to move through an interactive, museum-style experience featuring learning stations, visual displays, staff conversations, and opportunities to share questions and feedback.
How Dallas Takes Shape to help make a topic that can feel complicated, technical, or out of reach a little easier to understand. Planning & Development staff will be there to break things down, answer questions, and help connect zoning to everyday life in Dallas, from where we live and work to how we move, gather, and grow. The goal: a Development Code that is simple, clear, and future ready.
The Zoning 101 Tour is a part of the public engagement for Dallas Zoning Reform. The tour provides an opportunity for residents to learn, ask questions, and stay connected throughout Dallas Zoning Reform process. Dallas Zoning Reform is an effort to update Dallas’ Development Code to create a code that is simple, clear, and future ready.

- Learn what zoning is and what it is not
- Understand why Dallas is updating its Development Code
- Explore how zoning shapes housing, transportation, public health, culture, open space, and neighborhood life
- Ask questions directly to City staff
- Share feedback that can help guide future conversations
The goal is to make zoning easier to understand, easier to discuss, and easier to connect to the future of Dallas.
