Sanitation Services honored for recycling education efforts

Sanitation Services has received the State of Texas Alliance for Recycling award for “Outstanding Environmental Public Education and Outreach” Program.

Sanitation’s Environmental Education Initiative has provided recycling education to more than 30,000 students from kindergarten to fifth grade and recycling education modules for middle school students, as well as staff development for more than 400 teachers. The Initiative uses innovative lesson plans designed by the University of North Texas’ Environmental Sciences Education department, complementary school programs and presentations designed by Sanitation’s outreach team.

“The work that Sanitation Services is doing to educate students and teachers about the importance of waste reduction, reuse and recycling and environmental sustainability will have a lasting impact on our city,” said City Manager A.C. Gonzalez. “I’m very pleased to see their efforts being recognized with this award.” The mission of the State of Texas Alliance for Recycling is to increase recycling rates using balanced economic and sustainability principles. Alliance stakeholders, members and partners include all spectrum of recyclers, from industry and municipalities to academia, concerned citizens and fellow nonprofits.
