Residents urged to “Cease the grease” this holiday season

Dallas Water Utilities is urging residents to “cease the grease” this holiday season. The City’s Cease the Grease program collects used cooking oil throughout the year from more than 20 locations in Dallas at no cost. The North Texas Holiday Grease Roundup begins Monday Nov. 30 and continues through Friday Dec. 11.

The oil is converted into energy by a process that uses bacteria to digest the oil and other organics into methane gas. The gas is used to run generators at the Southside Wastewater Treatment Plant which in turn cleans our wastewater. Twelve cities, along with the North Central Texas Council of Governments and Dallas County Schools Alternative Fuel Program will be collecting used cooking oil. Some of the oil will be turned into biodiesel for buses run by Dallas County Schools which generates less air pollution than traditional buses.

This holiday season, you can recycle used cooking oil at no cost in the following cities: Addison, Arlington, *Bedford, *Coppell, Dallas, Denton, *Duncanville, Fort Worth, *Garland, Mansfield, McKinney and *Southlake.

*Cooking oil collected at these locations will be used to fuel Dallas County School buses.
