Park and Recreation, DPD recognized for youth boxing program

City of Dallas Park and Recreation and the Dallas Police Department (DPD) were recognized by the City Council for their outstanding commitment and dedication to youth development through a national champion producing, boxing program

In early February, 13-year-old participant Oliver Badillo won a Silver Gloves tournament championship in the 106-pound weight class. Badillo and his sister participate in the Dallas Police Athletic League (PAL) Boxing Program at Janie C. Turner Recreation Center.

The program was created in 2013 when Senior Corporal Daniel Espinosa asked Dallas Park and Recreation for permission to use Janie C. Turner as a boxing gym for kids. With the assistance of Recreation Manager Yolanda Carter and volunteers, the program kicked off and the gym officially opened its doors in May 2013.

The program is currently at capacity, with a waiting list of 50 kids who want to participate. PAL recently announced that a second boxing program is set to launch next year at Pleasant Oaks Recreation Center.
