Dallas Public Library Celebrates 1st GED Graduation

The Dallas Public Library held its first graduation ceremony Feb. 1 for 26 of 44 students who earned their GEDs after attending preparation classes at the library last year.

Decked out in caps and gowns, the graduates processed into the Central Library’s first floor auditorium while Fine Arts Librarian Andrew Anderson played “Pomp and Circumstance” on the piano. “One student said she expected the ceremony to be nice but never expected to feel so honored,” said Library Director Jo Giudice.

Giudice gave the welcoming address and Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Monica Alonzo was the keynote speaker. Each graduate received a certificate of achievement and a pencil with an eraser; signifying their ability to erase “plans unrealized” and start over at any point in their lives; just as they did by completing their GED.

Library Community Engagement Administrator Jasmine Africawala created the Library’s literacy programs and Literacy Coordinator Tracy Pinion and Programs Assistant Ann Clancy run the program. GED prep classes are available at five branch libraries and are taught by college interns and community volunteers.
