New WIC location brings community services to District 8
An area in great need of WIC services now has them available at an arm’s reach. A new WIC Clinic has opened in the Highland Hills community, located at 3624 Simpson Stuart Rd., inside of District 8 Councilman Tennell Atkins’ office.
The WIC program is a supplement nutrition program that strives to improve the health of low-income women, infants and children up to age five who are at nutritional risk. WIC provides nutritious foods to supplement diets, information on healthy eating and referrals to healthcare.
The new Highland Hills WIC consists of nine different rooms. Each room is labeled with an action word, sending a heartfelt message to clients to make everyone feel welcomed. The waiting area at the new location prioritizes offering hands-on activities for children to stimulate their minds and encourage learning by playing.
The location was opened in November 2019 and served various walk in clients within the first few hours of opening, highlighting the tremendous need and desire for WIC programming in the community.
WIC’s ultimate goal is to provide families with a nutritional plan that will promote obesity prevention, offer breastfeeding support, nutrition education and encourage residents to adopt a healthier lifestyle.
The Highland Hills WIC is open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and can be reached at 214-670-7200.
