Petrykivka Art Exhibit at Dallas City Hall Opens

Dallas City Hall will host its first-ever exhibit of Petrykivka art, a deeply symbolic folk art tradition originating in the village of Petrykivka, Ukraine. This exhibition exemplifies the growing bond between Dallas and Ukraine that began when Mayor Eric L. Johnson and Mayor Ihor Terekhov of Kharkiv signed a sister cities agreement in February 2022, followed by Mayor Terekhov’s visit to Dallas this past spring to further strengthen cooperation between the two cities. The exhibit also provides a space to celebrate Ukrainian culture and express gratitude to the people of North Texas, home to a vibrant and growing Ukrainian community—including artists, professionals, and recent refugees—who have brought their rich traditions and spirit to the region.

Recognized by UNESCO in 2013 as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, Petrykivka art is cherished for its intricate floral motifs and expressive brushwork. This centuries-old artistic tradition once graced Ukrainian homes, everyday items, and musical instruments—preserving its intricate beauty across generations. 

Today, it experiences a vibrant revival through contemporary artists like Hanna Chekodanova. She was introduced to the traditional art of Petrykivka painting at just 10 years old and has spent over 25 years mastering her technique. Her work bursts with color and emotion, showcasing flowers, birds, and animals rendered through expressive brush and finger strokes. Each piece carries profound symbolic meaning, telling stories of roots, resilience, and cultural pride, all infused with love, hope, and light. Her work has earned her numerous awards, with exhibitions held across the United Kingdom, the Czech Republic, and Canada. 

Due to the war in Ukraine, Hanna has made Dallas her home, where she continues to create, preserving this centuries-old tradition while giving it a fresh, contemporary expression. Her paintings embody not only the beauty of ornamentation but also a deeply personal story — one of resilience, hope, and an enduring connection to her homeland. 

The exhibition will be on view from August 1st through August 8th, 2025, at Dallas City Hall in the Main Lobby. On Wednesday, August 6th, from 3 pm to 4 pm, Artist, Hanna Chekodanova will be present at the exhibit to allow the community to meet with her personally and further learn about Petrykivka.
