City of Dallas Releases Gatewood Apartments Inspection Report

Two people died in a fire Wednesday at the Gatewood Senior Citizen Complex, 6008 Ridgecrest Road at 2:13 p.m. Wednesday. Exact cause of the deaths is pending the Medical Examiner’s report. The fire started on the fourth floor of the building, but the cause has not been determined.

Firefighters arrived at 2:13 p.m. to find smoke and fire coming from the four-story building. About 300 residents, most with mobility issues needed assistance as the response escalated to a five-alarm response. While some firefighters attacked the fire, others helped residents escape through hallways, balconies and windows.

A number of people were evaluated at the scene; four were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation and breathing difficulty.
