City archivist John Slate inducted as Fellow of the Society of American Archivists

John Slate, archivist for the City of Dallas, was inducted as a Fellow of the Society of American Archivists (SAA) in July. Awarded for outstanding contributions to the archiving profession, Fellow is the highest honor given by the SAA.

Slate has served Dallas in this position since the year 2000, but his passion for the profession started much earlier. He earned his master’s degree in Library and Information Sciences with a concentration in archival enterprise at the University of Texas at Austin. After college he was curator of collections and rare books at the Hertzberg Circus Collection and Museum at the San Antonio Public Library. Slate has also worked as an archivist at the Texas African-American Photography Archive.

Slate is a member of Metroplex Archivists, Academy of Certified Archivists and the Texas Historical Records Advisory Board. He has and co-authored Managing Local Government Archives which was published in 2016.
