New grocery store ends food desert in Dallas neighborhood

A Neighborhood Plus target area can now be crossed off the list of food deserts in Dallas. The City of Dallas Office of Economic Development assisted with funding to bring a new grocery store to the Highland Hills area.

Highland Hills residents will now be able to walk to Save-A-Lot at 3540 Simpson Stuart Road to buy fresh produce and meats. Residents, many of whom are seniors, have had to travel miles from their home to find a grocery store until now.

The Highland Hills area also has high unemployment and underemployment. More than 800 applications were received online for Save-A-Lot with 100-plus applicants interviewed. The City of Dallas assisted with workforce development, conducting a Career Resource Fair to help connect residents with jobs. Most employees at the new grocery store are residents of the nearby community.

The City of Dallas is continuing to work with the community and will also continue to help with workforce development and career path training, including conducting a Career Resource Fair to help connect residents with jobs.
