Lakewood Elementary School is expanding

The City Council voted to authorize an expansion for Lakewood Elementary, with 35 new classrooms and a cafeteria. Currently, 27 of the school’s classrooms are housed in modular buildings; after construction is completed, these buildings will be removed.

With the additional space for students, the City’s Department of Sustainable Development acknowledged that there could be a need for more parking spaces for teachers, staff and parents. The Engineering Section of the Department determined that there was adequate space already available and additional parking was not needed.

Neighbors were notified of the proposed changed. Since most of those that responded supported the plan, the school board voted to move it forward. The Department of Sustainable Development advised the Council to approve the plan as well.
