Finding Rover will use facial recognition to find lost dogs

The City of Dallas now has a new way to reunite owners with their lost dogs. It’s called Finding Rover, and the free service was announced by Mayor Mike Rawlings and Dallas Animal Services (DAS) Manager Jody Jones at a City Hall press conference.

Finding Rover’s free smart phone app provides instant identification of missing dogs by simply taking a photo. The app matches faces of lost dogs with those found or admitted to a shelter, allowing owners to look for their animals via smartphone or computer. Facial recognition technology shows possible matches within seconds.

The DAS launch of Finding Rover is the first of its kind in North Texas. The system was developed by John Polimeno. Sitting in a coffee shop several years ago, Polimeno noticed all the lost dog posters on a bulletin board. When he also noticed everyone glued to their smartphones, the idea was born.
