DWU updates Council on proposed Five-Year Water Conservation Work Plan

Dallas Water Utilities (DWU) Director Jody Puckett briefed the City Council April 20 on the proposed FY 2016-2020 Five-Year Water Conservation Plan. The complete plan will be presented to Council for adoption subject to annual appropriations on May 25.

The City’s goal is to reduce per capita water use by an average of one percent per year over the next five years, focusing heavily on water system improvements and targeting programming for top water users.

Through time of day watering restrictions, a mandatory twice weekly watering schedule and Green Building Task Force New Construction guidelines, a 26 percent decrease in per capita usage has been realized since FY 2001. These ongoing water conservation efforts have cumulatively saved approximately 316 billion gallons of water.

DWU services a population of more than 2.4 million, including 27 wholesale customer cities. The Five-Year Work Plan is a road map to comply with state water conservation requirements. Dallas has made great strides in reducing its per capita water demand through the use of conservation and efficiency programs.
