DAS and partners offering free treatment for heartworm positive dogs

Dallas Animal Services (DAS), Sponsor Adoptions and Dallas Companion Animal Project will provide free treatment for heartworm positive dogs adopted during April. DAS will also waive adoption fees for heartworm positive dogs, said DAS Division Manager Jody Jones.

“We very much appreciate the generosity of Sponsor Adoptions and the DCAP Lucy Fund,” Jones said. “Thanks to them we’ll be able to provide lifesaving treatment and place more dogs in permanent homes.”

More than 30,000 Heartworm cases are reported each year in Texas, despite widespread availability of preventative medicine. Dogs that test positive are often not adopted because of the high cost of treatment, ranging from $400 to $1,000.

“We also want to remind the public about the importance of monthly heartworm prevention for their pets,” said DAS Operations Manager Dr. Cate McManus. “Heartworm can be fatal if left untreated, but the monthly preventative is inexpensive and readily available.”

If you already have a dog, now is a good time to get a Heartworm test and begin monthly preventative treatment. For more information, please call Dallas Animal Services at (214) 670-8246.
