DallasPETS ride-along enforces responsible pet ownership

The City’s Public Information Office (PIO) recently joined Dallas Animal Services (DAS) staff for a ride-along to reinforce proper pet ownership. PIO staff, DAS Supervisor Esteban Rodriguez and Animal Services Officers Castillo, Darby, Valverde and Lawhon caught and impounded nine dogs and issued seven citations during the Feb. 4 event in southern Dallas.

“Our team’s ‘boots-on-the-ground’ approach to addressing loose dogs and promoting responsible pet ownership continues to be embraced by the community,” DAS Operations Manager Catherine McManus said.

Of the animals picked up during the ride-along, two were returned to their owners, three have already been adopted, three are being transferred to a rescue group and one will be available for adoption within the next few days. Also, all animals have now been spayed, neutered, vaccinated and registered.

In addition to enforcement, the team also engaged residents and distributed fliers to illustrate the importance of responsible pet ownership. Residents were reminded about their responsibility to keep their pets confined in an enclosure or on a leash; provide them with food, water and adequate shelter; and ensure that each pet is vaccinated and registered with the City.

“Our goal is to build relationships with residents, get to the root of a decades-long problem and help preserve the human-animal bond,” McManus said.
