Dallas Public Library collects backpacks, winter gear for homeless

Dallas Public Library is collecting supplies and backpacks for the 5th annual Backpack Challenge, a donation drive to provide winter needs to adults experiencing homelessness.

“Winter is a dangerous time to for our homeless neighbors,” said Dallas Public Library Adult Services Administrator Heather Lowe. “The Backpack Challenge and Giveaway is an opportunity for us to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday with our neighbors and remind them that we care.”

Now through November 20, residents are asked to work with their families, coworkers and friends to fill gender neutral adult backpacks with the following materials:

•Gloves                                                        •Fleece blanket
•Winter hat                                                   •Water Bottle
•Rain poncho                                               •Notes of encouragement
•Socks                                                         •Travel size toiletries
•Scarf

Library staff make an effort to ensure all backpacks have the same items. Please limit donations to the items listed.

Backpacks and supplies can be dropped off at any Dallas Public Library location. Backpacks will be distributed at a special event on Wednesday, November 27 at the J. Erik Jonsson Central Library, 1515 Young St. In 2018, more than 400 backpacks were given away. This year’s goal is to collect and distribute 500 backpacks.

Volunteers will be sorting items, writing notes of encouragement and making scarves November 15-26. For more information visit www.dallaslibrary.org/homeless.
