City reminds residents that carryout bag ordinance takes effect Jan. 1

Councilmember Dwaine R. Caraway, District 4, Director of Code Compliance Kris Sweckard and Senior Environmental Coordinator Kevin Lefebvre will host a 10 a.m. press conference Wednesday at City Hall to discuss the City’s carryout bag ordinance.

The ordinance, which takes effect Jan. 1, requires businesses that provide single-use bags to register with the City annually and collect a five cent fee for every single-use bag used by a customer.

“We want to remind citizens that starting Jan. 1, they will be charged five cents for each single-use bag, plastic or paper, but that they can avoid the charge by bringing their own bags from home,” Sweckard said. In addition to the Wednesday press conference, Lefebvre will also be a guest on Fox 4’s Good Day program Thursday morning to discuss the purpose of the ordinance, what bags are affected and which ones are exempt, and what the five cent fee will be used for.
